Warplanes bombed an ISIS training camp in Syria where foreign instructors trained potential suicide bombers, the Russian defense ministry said.
They claimed it was one of 49 terrorist targets hit by the Russian Air Forces today.
Major General Igor Konashenkov said: ‘Not far from Salma in Latakia province, a Su-24M bomber delivered a strike at a building, which was used as a terrorist training ground.
‘According to intelligence, there were ISIL foreign instructors, who were training people, including suicide bombers, for guerrilla warfare in areas liberated by the Syrian army.’
He added the strike also destroyed an explosives workshop.
Russians released this video which they claim shows a militant command centre being destroyed:
State sponsored broadcaster Russia Today announced the strike, reporting the general saying: ‘The militants’ new tactics is to spread their supply and command facilities, but it does not work. All their new infrastructure objects are being identified and destroyed.’
Konashenkov said civilians living in territory controlled by ISIS are helping the Russians target their bombing campaign by passing on information.
But some newspapers have reported Russia is mainly targeting other groups, not ISIS.
A US official told Fox News that up to 150 rebels trained by America had been killed by the Russians, claiming: ‘Putin is deliberately targeting our forces. Our guys are fighting for their lives.’
