French President Francois Hollande announced 7,000 of the 10,000 soldiers deployed on the country’s streets after the Islamist attacks in January will remain permanently.
In January of 2015, two Islamist terrorist forced their way into the office of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo, killed 11 people and injured an additional 11 people in the building and killed a French National Police officer. Additional related attacks occurred in the region, killing five more and injuring another 11 people.
In the aftermath, French police have been on high alert and military patrols have been guarding sensitive sites throughout France in anticipation of additional attacks.
Hollande has called the soldier’s presence a “significant effort … even a very big effort” due to the strain on the dwindling French budget, according to the sourcelink, a French official who requested anonymity said that the presence of soldiers could not stem terror attacks.
