ISIS in Bible Prophecy

Iraq, Iran, and the Kurds will attack Mosul

By Craig C. White

It turns out that the rise of ISIS in Mosul may play a very significant role end time events. I should say that the fall of ISIS in Mosul may be the sign to Israel that their time of trouble is at hand. This article is only a quick overview of ISIS in bible prophecy. I have so much more to tell you. So after you have finished reading this please go to my website (www.hightimetoawake.com) and read my other articles about ISIS, the Prophet Nahum, and the sign of Jonah.
Events in the Middle East, Northern Africa, Russia, and Central Asia are happening so fast now that we can barely keep up with them. Now that the leader of ISIS Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has declared himself as the head of a new Islamic Caliphate in Iraq and Syria, High Time to Awake readers have requested a report about ISIS in end time bible prophecy.
ISIS stands for the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. ISIS is headquartered in the city of Mosul, Iraq. ISIS consists mostly of Al-Qaeda terrorists from the region around Mosul. Mosul is in the Nineveh Province just across the Tigris River from ancient Assyria’s capital city of Nineveh. As a matter of fact the ruins of ancient Nineveh are included inside of Mosul’s city limits! The city of Mosul represents Nineveh in end time bible prophecy and ISIS represents ancient Assyria.
Judging from bible prophecy it seems that Islam will succeed in growing its new Caliphate but I don’t think that ISIS will remain as its head. I think that the role of ISIS will be to slaughter its own countrymen in the Nineveh Province of northern Iraq and in Syria, then to be destroyed by a flood and attacked by its neighbors. Today ISIS is killing many Christians, non-Muslims, and also many Muslims who refuse to join them. ISIS is encountering a lot of resistance in Mosul and the surrounding Nineveh Province. ISIS is responding by killing thousands of innocent citizens among their own countrymen. They are stacking dead bodies like cord-wood.
ISIS has also destroyed many mosques and shrines in and around Mosul. There have been reports that ISIS has even destroyed their shrine to the Prophet Jonah. Jonah is mentioned in the Quran as well as the Bible. Remember that Jonah was sent to Nineveh. That generation repented but it seems that this generation doesn’t want the chance. God told Jonah that Nineveh would be destroyed in forty (40) days if they didn’t repent. ISIS completely obliterated Jonah’s shrine using high explosives. The blowing up of Jonah’s shrine occurred on July 24th 2014.
I think that the Prophet Nahum tells us that God will send a flood of water and then also send an army against ISIS for their many murders and overflowing brutality in Mosul. The book of Nahum is all about God’s anger and judgment against the ancient city of Nineveh. The city of Nineveh was completely destroyed in 612 BC by a flood from the overflowing Tigris River and then attacked by a coalition of three nations; the Babylonians, Medes, and Persians. Today these nations are represented by Iraq, the Kurds, and Iran. I think that we should notice that all three of these modern day nations have strong motives to overthrow ISIS in the Nineveh Province. As a matter of fact all three of these nations are already fighting against ISIS. Perhaps God will once again send these nations against Nineveh (or Mosul) to destroy them!
Nahum 1:8 But with an overrunning flood he will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue his enemies.
In the verse above, the Prophet Nahum says that God will destroy the place where Nineveh sat with a flood! The prophecies of Nahum refer to Nineveh’s destruction in 612 BC. It seems that they could also refer to Mosul’s rebuke in present day.
In the verse below Nahum identifies one particular person among the inhabitants of Nineveh who is an enemy of the God of Israel. Nahum may be identifying Assyrian King Sinsharishkun who was in power during the fall of Nineveh. Nahum may also be identifying the ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Al-Baghdadi has declared himself as the ruler of a new Islamic Empire. Of course the goal of Islam is the annihilation of Israel so Al-Baghdadi is also the enemy of the God of Israel. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi now lives in Mosul.
Nah 1:11 There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the LORD, a wicked counsellor.
The verses below describe a city that is filled with bloodshed. This description looks a lot like Mosul today! ISIS today is on a rampage slaughtering thousands of innocent people among their own citizens.
Nah 3:1-3 Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and robbery; the prey departeth not; 2 The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots. 3 The horseman lifteth up both the bright sword and the glittering spear: and there is a multitude of slain, and a great number of carcases; and there is none end of their corpses; they stumble upon their corpses:
God will become so sick of their brutality that he will send a flood and an army against them.
Nahum’s prophecies seem to me to be applicable to both the ancient city of Nineveh as well as to the modern day city of Mosul. Nineveh and Mosul represent the same nations in the same place in the same circumstance. For instance Nahum calls Nineveh “the bloody city”. The Assyrians were infamous for their brutality. They killed many people. They stacked up dead bodies in the mountains. They beheaded many, and made piles of their heads. They poured out their blood into the Tigris River. I have seen photos and videos of ISIS doing all these exact same things in Mosul!
I am applying what Nahum predicted about the ancient city of Nineveh to the modern day city of Mosul. I am also applying what we know from world history to the circumstances in Mosul. The ancient city of Nineveh was destroyed by a coalition of three nations; Babylon, Persia, and the Medes. Considering that these same three nations (Iraq, Iran, and the Kurds) are today fighting against ISIS in Mosul. I am simply observing history repeating itself. As far as I know the bible does not spell out who was to destroy ancient Nineveh. So I suppose that other nations could be involved in the destruction of Mosul. My bet though is with ancient history.
Mosul is a major city and shipping port on the Tigris River in the Nineveh Province of northern Iraq. It is also the headquarters and stronghold of Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Now Al-Qaeda (ISIS) has taken over the city. There is talk now of redrawing the borders of Iraq. The Middle East and Central Asia are being divided according to their ancient borders. Mosul in the Nineveh Province of Iraq is the headquarters of the ancient Assyrian Empire.
The Kurds have also regained territory in the Al-Qaeda attack on Mosul. The Iraqi army has abandoned the ancient Kurdish capital of Kirkuk. The Kurds were able to waltz in and reclaim the city without firing a shot. The Kurds are the ancient Medes. The Medes were joint rulers with Persia (today’s Iran) in the Medea-Persia Empire. So the Ancient Medes have also regained their ancient capital. Reestablishing the capitals of ancient world empires means the near formation of the next world empire. I am certain that the Kurds will side with Iran when it comes time to create a new Central Asian Union. I think that this Central Asian Union is represented by the Leopard in Daniel chapter 7. For more please read my commentary titled “The Leopard is Upon Us!”
Over the last couple of years ISIS has been fighting to conquer Syria. So far they haven’t been able to beat Assad and the Syrian army. But the bible says that Damascus, Syria will fall. Jeremiah 49:23 describes an invasion into Syria coming from the Turkish border. So I think that Turkey will soon enter Syria and destroy Damascus. Turkey will invade Syria and wipe out Damascus thus claiming Turkey’s rightful place as head of this Islamic Caliphate.
Turkey along with Al-Qaeda from Libya has its eye on conquering Syria and so does Al-Qaeda from Iraq (ISIS). ISIS in Mosul has already declared that they will try to overtake Turkey next. I think that the bible tells us that ISIS in the Nineveh Province of Iraq will soon suffer a short term defeat.
Now Al-Qaeda (ISIS) is fighting for Iraq. They have taken Mosul which was already the Al-Qaeda stronghold and headquarters in Iraq. I don’t think that ISIS will take Baghdad. The Iranian army is helping Iraq to hold the city.
I don’t think that ISIS will expand their influence much further. I think that they will be drawn back into Mosul and the surrounding Nineveh Province where God will deal harshly with them. ISIS is busy killing everybody who doesn’t support them. God will become so sick of their massacres that he will put an end to them.
While I think that ISIS will be rebuked in the near future I don’t think that they will be completely eliminated until after Jesus second coming. At that time Assyria will be defeated completely. Micah chapter 5 describes Northern Iraq’s final destruction at the hands of Israeli military forces. After Jesus’ second coming Israel will send “seven rulers and eight princes” into northern Iraq to decimate it. Micah chapter 5 continues to tell of the military exploits of Israeli soldiers in several other surrounding nations. This is probably explaining the final capture of all the land between the Nile and Euphrates Rivers that God promised to give to Israel.
Micah 5 5-6 And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. 6 And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.
The book of Zephaniah consists of three chapters. The first chapter talks about Israel’s punishment. God uses the surrounding nations to Judge Israel until Israel finally turns back to God. Zephaniah’s second chapter describes the overthrow of Palestinian held areas inside of Israel and then the overthrow of the nations surrounding Israel. Northern Iraq is included in this list. I think that the bible tells us that these geographic regions will fall at the hands of Israeli forces. This happens after Jesus returns and defeats many armies that have gathered against Israel.
Zephaniah 2:13 And he will stretch out his hand against the north, and destroy Assyria; and will make Nineveh a desolation, and dry like a wilderness.
Zephaniah’s third chapter tells us about Israel as it finally lives securely in obedience with their God.
Just as Jonah warned Nineveh of impending doom; here is God’s last minute warning to every person who would fight against Israel.
Zep 2:2-3 Before the decree bring forth, before the day pass as the chaff, before the fierce anger of the LORD come upon you, before the day of the LORD’S anger come upon you. 3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger.
Northern Iraq’s current political landscape looks a lot like it did when the city of Nineveh was destroyed in 612 BC. The same three nations that destroyed Nineveh surround Mosul today! If world history repeats itself as it often does in bible prophecy then Iraq, Iran, and the Kurds will soon attack Mosul and defeat ISIS.
More about the flood: As you know the modern day city of Mosul was built just across the Tigris River from the ruins of the ancient city of Nineveh. Nineveh was the capital city of the Assyrian Empire. Today the Mosul dam sits on the Tigris River just north of the city of Mosul. Mosul is the headquarters of ISIS in Iraq. The Mosul dam was declared the most dangerous dam in the world by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The ground it was built on is being disolved by the water. The ISIS dam needs constant maintenance. ISIS briefly controlled the dam for about eleven days until the Kurds and the Iraqi Army regained control. During that time dam maintenance was neglected. Their failure to maintain the dam could cause the dam to burst consequently flooding the city of Mosul! The catastrophic flooding of Mosul could destroy a large concentration of ISIS members along with their stolen money and weapons!
The Prophet Nahum said it would happen and it did. In 612 BC God sent a very uncommon, very very heavy rain storm! God sent torrential rains causing the Tigris River to overflow its banks flooding the ancient city of Nineveh! Perhaps God will once again send a flood of water along with these same nations of Iraq, Iran, and the Kurds to destroy ISIS in the city of Mosul!
